Relevant Coursework

I have included both public relations coursework as well as management coursework. During my internship, I found that the management classes were almost as important as the public relations classes because I was able to instill much of what I learned from the human resources class into the company.

Writing for Public Relations - This course examined the format and style for writing public relations materials. The main project for this course was to create a media kit for a non-profit or professional company, which we did for Mammoth PrintShop. In our media kit, we included a press release, backgrounder, fact sheet, brochure, biographies and a feature story.

Case Studies in Public Relations - Throughout this course, we studied both effective and ineffective methods of public relations though studying actual cases from the field itself.

Survey Research Methods - We discovered the basic principles and foundations of survey research methods. As many of the projects in the PR major, we broke into groups. My group did a project for PROpenMic.com. We sent out a survey to all of the PR professionals from the site inquiring about their opinions of digital natives.

Style and Design in Public Relations Messages - You are seeing all of the benefits of this course as you read this text. I created this entire website because of this class. Professor Robert French taught us HTML code, how to use Dreamweaver and Flash, and so much more. He also required us to write blogs, create and edit videos, and manage social networking sites throughout this semester.

Public Relations Campaigns - This capstone course provided us with the opportunity to apply all of our PR knowledge into creating a campaign for a local client. We conducted a client analysis, identified a target public and brainstormed ways to implement a creative campaign. You can see our campaign by going to this page.

Management Courses:

Human Resource Management - This class opened up a world of options I can implement into PR. During my internship, I was able to create a legal employment application form and help co-workers create interview questions because of the issues we discussed in class.

Organizational Behavior - Our professor encouraged us to partake in many group activities during this class so that we could truly understand the process and necessities of teamwork. While developing leadership skills, we also gained a better understanding of the causes and consequences of the behavior of people within organizations.
